Rivet's Workshop Prototypes

Experimental magical items seeking approval and refinement

Introduction

This workshop catalog documents magical items still in the conceptual or prototype stage. Each entry represents a potential innovation that Rivet is seeking feedback on, materials for, or approval to develop. These items exist primarily as sketches, theoretical models, or early prototypes not yet ready for practical application.

Collaboration Invited

Fellow Zululu members and esteemed Dungeon Master: Your feedback is essential to refining these concepts! Comments, suggestions, and balance considerations are welcomed and encouraged.

Prototype Details

Stormstrider, Sacred Axe of Talos

Intended Rarity: Legendary Attunement: (requires attunement)
Development Phase: Theoretical
Materials Needed:

  • Storm giant essence
  • Mithril filaments
  • Storm glass crystals
  • Divine blessing of Talos

Concept Description

This massive single-bladed greataxe thrums with the divine lightning of Talos, god of storms. Its jagged blade resembles a bolt of lightning frozen in steel, runes of storm and invention spiraling across its surface. The haft is wrapped in mithril filaments and storm glass crystals, pulsing faintly with thunderous energy. When swung, faint arcs of lightning trail behind the blade, and when thrown, it streaks like a thunderbolt before snapping back to its master's hand.

Proposed Features

Divine Weapon

  • You gain a +3 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon.
  • The axe deals an additional 1d6 lightning damage on a hit.

Storm's Return
You can throw Stormstride as a ranged weapon with a range of 60 feet. Immediately after the attack, hit or miss, you can call the weapon back to your hand as a bonus action. On its return path, creatures in a straight line between you and the axe must succeed on a DC 16 Dexterity saving throw or take 2d6 lightning damage.

Divine Bond
Stormstride cannot be disarmed except by divine intervention. If a creature other than the attuned wielder attempts to hold it, the axe shocks them for 2d6 lightning damage.

Storm Charges
Stormstride has 5 charges. It regains 1d4+1 expended charges daily at dawn. If the weapon is held beneath a natural thunderstorm for 10 minutes, it regains all charges.

  • Lightning Step (1 charge): As a bonus action, you teleport up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space you can see, appearing in a crackle of lightning. Each creature within 5 feet of where you appear takes 1d6 lightning damage.

  • Thunderstride (3 charges): As an action, you teleport up to 120 feet to an unoccupied space you can see. Each creature within 10 feet of your departure and arrival points must succeed on a DC 16 Constitution saving throw or take 2d6 lightning damage + 2d6 thunder damage.

  • Storm's Wrath (5 charges, 1/day): As an action, you teleport up to 500 feet to a space you can see. When you arrive, all creatures within 20 feet of you must succeed on a DC 18 Dexterity saving throw or take 5d6 lightning + 5d6 thunder damage, half as much on a successful save.

Lightning Conduit
If the wielder throws Stormstride and teleports in the same turn, the axe becomes a streak of lightning, returning instantly to the wielder's hand. Creatures in the path between the axe's location and the wielder take 2d6 lightning damage.

Development Process

Each prototype follows this development path:

  1. Conceptual Phase - Initial idea and sketch
  2. Material Gathering - Collection of necessary components
  3. DM Approval - Review of mechanics and balance
  4. Prototype Construction - Initial creation and testing
  5. Refinement - Adjustment based on testing results
  6. Final Development - Completion of the magical item

Items move from this prototyping catalog to the main Arcane Atelier catalog once fully developed and functional.
